点击次数:1 An In-depth Analysis of Non-woven Fabrics: Properties, Production and Industry Development
Non-woven fabrics, also known as nonwovens, are innovative fibrous materials distinct from traditional woven and knitted textiles. Instead of being produced by weaving or knitting yarns, they are manufactured through mechanical, thermal, or chemical bonding of fibers, endowing them with unique and versatile performance characteristics. Thanks to their superior comprehensive properties and cost advantages, non-woven fabrics have become indispensable functional materials widely applied in medical hygiene, daily consumption, industrial filtration, environmental protection, packaging and other fields, supporting the rapid development of modern industrial and consumer industries.
Non-woven fabrics boast a rich set of dual and adjustable physical and chemical properties, covering diversified application demands. They can be either durable for long-term use or disposable for one-time application, featuring reliable insulation and non-conductivity. In terms of texture, the materials are flexible and soft on one hand, and rigid and stiff on the other, with adjustable density and expansibility. They present both isotropic and anisotropic structural characteristics, achieving excellent filtering performance and a unique breathable yet water-repellent effect. Additionally, non-woven fabrics integrate multiple advantages: lightweight, fluffy and warm in texture, variable thickness ranging from ultra-thin cicada-wing-like sheets to thick felt-like layers, and dual functions of waterproofing and moisture permeability. They are adaptable to diversified processing methods including ironing, sewing and mould pressing forming, and possess professional properties such as flame retardancy, anti-static, wear resistance, wrinkle resistance, high elasticity, strong moisture absorption and water repellency, fully meeting the differentiated needs of various industrial and civilian scenarios.
With excellent inherent material advantages, polypropylene-based non-woven fabrics stand out among numerous textile materials. First of all, they are extremely lightweight. Taking polypropylene resin as the core raw material, the fabric has a specific gravity of only 0.9, merely three-fifths of cotton, with excellent bulkiness and a comfortable hand feel. Secondly, the fine fiber structure of 2–3 denier forms soft fabrics through spot thermal fusion bonding, delivering moderate softness and superior user comfort. In terms of practical performance, polypropylene raw materials have zero water absorption rate, enabling the finished products to have outstanding water repellency. The porous fibrous structure ensures excellent air permeability, keeping the fabric surface dry and easy to clean and maintain.
In terms of safety and durability, qualified non-woven fabrics adopt FDA-compliant raw materials without harmful chemical components. They are stable in performance, non-toxic, odorless and non-irritating to human skin, making them safe for long-term contact use. Chemically, polypropylene is an inert substance with strong antibacterial and chemical resistance. It can effectively resist moth erosion, isolate bacterial and pest intrusion in liquid environments, and withstand alkali corrosion, ensuring that the structural strength of the fabric will not be damaged by external erosion, and realizing excellent anti-mold and anti-corrosion effects. In terms of mechanical properties, non-woven fabrics are produced by polypropylene spunbond web thermal bonding, with overall strength superior to ordinary short-fiber textiles. Their longitudinal and transverse strength are close, presenting no directional strength difference and stable physical performance.
Environmental friendliness is another core competitive advantage of non-woven fabrics. Different from traditional non-degradable chemical textiles, polypropylene has a relatively weak chemical molecular structure, whose molecular chains are easy to break under natural conditions. This structural feature enables non-woven fabrics to achieve effective natural degradation, avoiding long-term environmental pollution caused by waste textiles. In the context of global low-carbon and sustainable development, this eco-friendly property has greatly expanded the application scope and market potential of non-woven fabrics.
Benefiting from superior material performance and expanding downstream demand, China has firmly occupied the position of the world’s largest producer and consumer of non-woven fabrics, dominating the global industrial pattern with complete industrial chain supporting facilities and mature production technology. In 2025, China’s total output of non-woven fabrics reached 9.207 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 7.5%, maintaining a steady growth momentum in the industrial textile sector. From the monthly production trend of 2025, the industry showed a stable development state of "opening high, falling back and stabilizing". From January to September, the output of non-woven fabrics of above-scale industrial enterprises increased by 5% year-on-year, and the average monthly output increased by 12.2% compared with the second quarter, reflecting the continuous recovery of domestic market demand and steady improvement of capacity utilization. The annual capacity utilization rate of industrial sample enterprises reached 73.5%, with 36% of enterprises achieving a capacity utilization rate of over 80%, showing stable industrial operation quality.
In terms of production process structure, China’s non-woven fabric industry has formed a clear differentiated pattern. Spunbond non-woven fabrics occupy the largest market share and become the mainstream product in the industry, followed by spunlace, needle-punched and thermal bonded products. Melt-blown non-woven fabrics maintain a stable output scale, focusing on high-end fields such as medical protection and precision filtration. Multiple process technologies correspond to diversified downstream application scenarios, covering medical and health care, daily cleaning, industrial filtration, environmental protection governance, commodity packaging and other fields, jointly driving the continuous expansion of the industry scale.
Looking forward to the long-term development, driven by terminal consumption upgrading and industrial technological iteration, China’s non-woven fabric industry will maintain steady growth. The industry development focus will gradually shift from relying on scale expansion to high-quality development. The product structure will continue to be optimized, with low-end conventional products gradually transforming to high-value-added functional and intelligent non-woven fabrics. Meanwhile, under the guidance of global environmental protection policies and market demand, biodegradable and low-carbon non-woven materials will become the mainstream development trend, continuously injecting new vitality into the sustainable development of the industry.
